The County Superintendent of Schools is elected by the voters of Contra Costa County and is the Chief Executive Officer of the Contra Costa County Office of Education (CCCOE). Lynn Mackey administers all County Office of Education programs and facilitates cooperation among schools, colleges, universities, government and community organizations. She is responsible for monitoring and approving all budgets for school districts in Contra Costa County. In addition, she serves as an advocate for education with the legislature and the public and is responsible for all hiring and human resource decisions at CCCOE.

Lynn Mackey was elected as the Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools in November 2018. A lifelong resident of Contra Costa County, her extensive background in education has profoundly shaped her career and commitment to nurturing inclusive educational environments.
Beginning her journey as a GED teacher and later serving as a curriculum specialist for county schools and detention facilities, Mackey's early experience as a GED student herself fueled her passion for promoting educational equity. She takes great pride in witnessing her former GED students thrive in the community.
As Superintendent, Mackey remains dedicated to enhancing supportive school environments, particularly for students facing adversity. She believes that ensuring equal opportunity and access is fundamental to student achievement and eagerly embraces each day as an educator.
With over 25 years of experience in education, Mackey has held pivotal roles within the Contra Costa County Office of Education, including principal of Contra Costa County’s Court and Community Schools. Her exceptional work earned her the Administrator of the Year award in 2012 and 2018 for her advocacy on behalf of the county’s most vulnerable students. Before her election, Mackey served as CCCOE’s deputy superintendent, overseeing the Educational Services department.
Superintendent Lynn Mackey holds a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Cal State East Bay and a Bachelor's degree in English from Mills College.
