Module 1: Why We Teach Attendance

Online Class Attendance Works $0.00

This 40-minute course for school leaders, teachers, school support staff and community partners is an introduction to chronic absence, a surprisingly widespread and often unrecognized problem. Chronic absence profoundly affects student achievement, and causes teachers’ time in the classroom to be less productive. School leaders, teachers, school support staff and community partners all have a role to play in addressing chronic absence. Researchers have identified strategies to reduce chronic absence. Evidence shows that when parents, schools, educators and communities work together, we can beat the odds and witness a turnaround in chronic absence.

This course is part of a three-part blended curriculum. This is the first e-learning module in the series. Attendance Works recommends beginning with Module 1.

Module 2: Creating a Culture of Attendance (Primary Grades Version)

This 40-minute course for school leaders, teachers, school support staff and community partners focuses on the universal, low-cost strategies that are usually sufficient to prevent chronic absence among students with satisfactory and at-risk attendance. The strategies of cultivating a welcoming environment, building positive relationships, using effective messaging and recognizing good and improved attendance can be used to prevent chronic absence and combat attendance dips. While taking this module school staff and community partners are encouraged to reflect upon how they serve as a first line of prevention through these activities that not only promote attendance but create an engaging, positive welcoming school climate that facilitates learning.

This course is part of a three-part blended curriculum. This is the second e-learning module in the series.

Module 3: Using Data for Intervention & Support (Primary Grades Version)

Online Class Attendance Works 40 minutes $0.00

This 40-minute course for school leaders, teachers, school support staff and community partners introduces Tier 2 early intervention strategies for addressing moderate chronic absence, including monitoring chronic absence data, analyzing root causes, matching appropriate interventions to root causes and connecting with students and families. While schools vary—in size, resources, staffing and the types of students they serve—this course teaches the key principles of using data and insights into root causes that can be useful in all educational settings. In schools with high levels of chronic absence or scarce resources, learners are encouraged to consider reaching out to potential community partners.

This course is part of a three-part blended curriculum. This is the 3rd e-learning module in the series. It is most useful for participants familiar with the concepts of the first two modules and who work in districts and or schools that have made chronic absence data available and that have begun to invest in supports—including support staff such as nurses, counselors and community outreach workers—to improve attendance.

For additional information and resources, please see the Teaching Attendance 2.0 Toolkit.
